Touring Washington D.C.

Today we took the tourmobile hop-on, hop-off tour of Washington D.C. We rode the metro from Vienna to Union Station and bought our tickets. I was a little disappointed that we weren't on the open top double decker bus until it started to rain - then it wasn't so bad to be enclosed. :) Our first stop was the Jefferson Memorial so we were able to get a closer look than yesterday. It was very impressive.
Our next stop was Arlington Cemetery. My friend's parents are buried in section 7A so we looked around but we couldn't find the specific sites.
We were just in time to see the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier - and it was impressive! What an incredible display of precision and timing. I loved it!
We had our very own tour guide for the Capitol. John has been working for Senator Sam Graves for about a month and it was so much fun to hear him talk about his work with such passion. He absolutely loves being here and he is so smart!! He made a fabulous tour guide because of his wealth of information.

One of the joys of being a youth director is getting to watch your youth grow up and become adults and begin their own lives. Each one is so different and has such different experiences. It's fun to stay connected with them and be able to live vicariously through the adventures that come their way. I am really looking forward to seeing what God has in store for John because whatever it is, it will be way different from anything I have ever experienced and I want to hear all about it!
There was a great little Mexican restaurant just outside of the capitol called Tortilla Coast. We were famished by the time we finished our bus tour and the tour of the capitol so we headed over there for an early supper. It was quite tasty!
Having eaten, we got our second wind so we decided to trek over to Georgetown University where John hopes to attend graduate school in a few years. It was just beginning to get dark which made it tough for pictures but beautiful for an evening stroll. We even caught a few lightning bugs along the way! Georgetown is a beautiful campus. We even had a "small world" experience when we hopped on the bus and started talking to three college age guys sitting near us and discovered that one went to Park Hill South High school and John knew him from debate. How bizarre!!
On our way back to the Metro we passed a Krispy Kreme donut shop and couldn't resist picking up a box for our breakfast. We had fun riding the longest escalator in the world (or so it seemed) in the Rosslyn Metro Station. We were all exhausted by the time we got home but it was another fabulous day!
